It’s a good idea to perform an ultrasound gynecological control on an annual basis, subject to a number of recommendations from the doctor. Check regularly can help to put an early diagnosis of ovarian or uterine pathology.
The gynecological ultrasound can also be performed in case of:

• pelvic pain,
• dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation),
• menorrhagia (excessive menstrual bleeding),
• breakthrough bleeding (intermenstrual bleeding),
• delayed menarche,
• control of the localization of intrauterine devices,
• cancer screening in patients with increased risk,
• in the case of follicular monitoring techniques for induction of ovulation.

The gynecological ultrasound is carried out via a transabdominal ultrasound transducer (probe) that rests on the abdomen with the interposition of a water-soluble hypoallergenic gel. Transvaginal ultrasound allows a much more accurate view of the pelvic organs. This procedure is simple and painless and it's performed through a transducer (probe) inserted into the vagina.

During the gynecological ultrasound, performed preferentially by transvaginal way, you can study some of the organs that occupy the female pelvis: uterus, cervix and ovaries. You can assess the position, size and echogenicity of the uterus, endometrial thickness and echogenicity, location, size and echogenicity of the ovaries, the pouch of Douglasas well as the vascular anatomy of the pelvis.

You do not need any specific preparation for a gynecological ultrasound examination. With regard to the transvaginal approach, the patient must urinate before the examination to empty her bladder, or at least nearly empty. It would also be a good idea for patients who suffer from constipation to perform an enema (available in most pharmacies) the night before the examination, to clean out the large intestine and thus facilitate a clear ultrasound view.

As with other ultrasound techniques, gynecological ultrasound can also be restrictive, which could completely nullify the examination. The ultrasound display can be hindered, more or less relevant to the fat layer of the patient’s abdomen (which absorbs the ultrasound), or by bowel layers that are interposed between the transducer and the organs to be evaluated, the excessive uterine fibromatosis of the bowel, or by the lack of the patient’s cooperation.
