NEXPLANON
THE NEW LONG-TERM SUBDERMAL CONTRACEPTIVE SOLUTION
WHAT IS NEXPLANON?
Dimensions: length 4 cm, thickness 2mm
It's a long-lasting, radio-opaque, non-biodegradable contraceptive, containing only progesterone, which requires a prescription and can be inserted up to 3 years. It does not require daily administration, weekly or monthly, so the patient does not have to remember to take it every day. It's a soft and flexible stick that is inserted under the skin of the arm by the gynecologist.
It's a discreet method; in fact, only the patient and the gynecologist know that the implant is inserted.
Most of the women are not able to see it after insertion, but they can feel it by palpation of the area where it was inserted.
WHAT IS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF NEXPLANON?
Nexplanon can be considered one of the most effective contraceptives currently present on the market. If inserted properly by qualified medical personnel, and used in accordance with the instructions, it helps to ensure protection from pregnancy greater than 99%.
DOE THE DEVICE CONTAIN ESTROGENS?
Nexplanon contains only progestin and no estrogen. The gynecologist prescribes it in cases where you cannot or do not want to take estrogens.
IS THE PLANT DISCREET?
Once inserted,
Nexplanon is not visible to the naked eye, which makes it extremely discreet and personal use of this contraceptive method. Precisely for this reason, in case of necessity, you need to report the presence of the subcutaneous implant to the nursing staff.
The two ends of the system should still be detectable by gently pressing your fingers on the insertion point.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The plant carries two actions that prevent pregnancy. First, it prevents that the body has ovulation (the release of eggs). Secondly, it makes it thicker the cervical mucus, which acts as a barrier preventing the sperm to reach the egg and fertilize it.
HOW IS THE IMPLANT INSERTED AND REMOVED?
Nexplanon is inserted and removed through a small incision, performed by the gynecologist at the Surgery. During these phases, it is given a mild local anesthetic to reduce discomfort during insertion and removal.
At the time of the insertion, it is important to inform the gynecologist on the current period of the menstrual cycle and if you are going to replace a previous method of contraception. It is essential that the implant is inserted at the appropriate time of the menstrual cycle or period of transition from another contraceptive method.
IS THE PLANT REVERSIBLE?
After a maximum period of 3 years, the implant should be removed but can be immediately replaced with a new system.
If the user wishes it, also, she has the possibility to request the removal of the system at any time. The normal condition of pre-existing fertility will return within a few weeks of proper removal of the implant by the gynecologist.
After removal of the implant, if you proceed to the immediate insertion of another implant, there is no interruption of the contraceptive protection.
For women with overweight problems, the gynecologist may consider proceeding with an early replacement of the implant.
WHICH ARE THE MOST COMMON SIDE EFFECTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE USE OF THE SUBCUTANEOUS IMPLANT?
The most common side effects of Nexplanon are linked to the possibility of undergoing changes in menstrual periods, as happens with progesteron -based contraceptives.
In the majority of the cases, the number of bleeding days is similar to that of the normal cycle. Once verified the correct insertion of the implant, any changes in the menstrual cycle does not imply incompatibility with your body or a lack of contraceptive protection. In general, you do not need to do anything. You should consult with your doctor just in case of particularly abundant and prolonged bleeding.
Other side effects may include those classically associated with the use of hormonal birth control methods such as acne, breast pain or stress and weight gain.
You should always tell your doctor if you are taking other medications, including over the counter medicines, alternative medicines and prescription drugs as some of them may decrease the effectiveness of the Nexplanon contraceptive. In these cases, the gynecologist may suggest the use of a barrier method of contraception for added security. For any information relating to possible unwanted side effects or related to the use of the product, it is advisable to consult your gynecologist.
